The cover is finally here!!!

This is my favorite of all the covers I've made so far, and I'm super excited about it. I can't wait to be able to hold the book in my hands. 😊

But before I give you the cover, here's the book description:

Carrie Mouse is Almost Here!

Carrie Mouse and the Piano Lesson comes out next week!

I'm super excited about this...as a music teacher, it's a story that's very special to me. So, to help you get excited about this book too, I want to share some fun facts about the book.

It's inspired by one of my students.

I had a student whose mom told me he was disappointed after his first lesson that he couldn't just sit down at the piano and play songs already, but he worked hard to learn the concepts he needed to play Star Wars music and did a great job playing a custom arranged Star Wars medley the next spring. (BTW, I'm pretty sure I've taught more John Williams in my studio than any other composer.) This was the primary inspiration for the book. I just decided it was best to go with something public domain for the song Carrie wants so badly to play.

Miss Legato's teaching method is loosely based on Step by Step by Edna Mae Burnam.

It's a series that's pretty much never used by anyone but me in my music circles, and it's kind of theory-lite, but I've had the best success with teaching kids to read music with this series. It teaches the notes one at a time, which is a lot easier for someone new to music to keep up with, particularly for auditory learners. (I have a much easier time teaching sight reading to visual and tactile learners.)

Miss Legato's statement "The more you practice, the faster you'll learn," is one I've used repeatedly.

Yep, trying to get kids to practice is a constant part of teaching music. I actually used a variation of this phrase with a student last week. Practice 40 hours a day!

(This book is a good excuse to go binge watch TwoSetViolin. 😁 Or...go practice.)

There is an object in Carrie's room that foreshadows the next Carrie Mouse book my sister and I have planned.

But I'm not going to tell you what it is. 😉

You're not going to find any five-stringed violins in this book.

I mean, this is about piano, so there aren't any violins, but the point is, my sister plays piano, so the illustrations of instruments are as accurate as can be on that scale. I've seen some really inaccurate portrayals of instruments in picture books and they always drive me crazy.

Music is amazing.

And teaching it is one of my favorite things. So is writing, so combining the two in this little story was a lot of fun, and I love the way Rebekah's illustrations came out.

I rarely say anything about Carrie on here for some reason—I need to fix that—but she's a special little mouse to me. I created her back when I was seven, this headstrong, determined little mouseling with much to learn, and I can hardly believe it's been nearly two years since she was first introduced to the world through my sister's amazing sculpting skills.

So, nearly two years after you got to read about her adventure being trapped in the giant garage, Carrie Mouse is back to take on her newest challenge: piano lessons!

Carrie Mouse and the Piano Lesson is inspired by my own experiences as a music teacher, and so, as someone who enjoys sharing my love of music, it's very special to me.

I Wrote a Fanfic!

Just popping in for a moment to share that I posted a fanfic for the first time over the weekend! It's not the Star Wars sequel trilogy fix-it I mentioned before—that one's still slowly getting planned between working on Acktorek, Carrie Mouse, etc.—but it's still Star Wars, inspired by Secrets of the Jedi by Jude Watson, which has been my favorite Star Wars book since I was about fourteen.

It's about Obi-Wan Kenobi's relationship (or rather, non-relationship) with fellow Jedi Siri Tachi, but from Siri's perspective as she reflects on it through the years. It's heartbreaking, but that's their story. Jedi love is always doomed, I guess. Anyway, I enjoyed writing it, so I hope you'll enjoy reading it!

No Chance Meeting is finally here! I beta read this book and I loved it so much! It's a contemporary romance, but not really of the fluffy nothing-really-bad-ever-happens Hallmark variety. No, it deals with suicide, depression, PTSD, and how God is still there through all of it. It's just so good. And yeah, I say that about everything Jaye writes, but that's because it's the truth. Yes, Ilyon is even more special to me (AND I NEED DAICAN'S HEIR), but Alex and Riley have a very special place in my heart as well.

Top 5 Favorite Writing Books

For this guest post I wanted to offer something for fellow writers, so I decided to list my top five favorite writing books. Each one of these has had a positive impact on my writing, and I highly recommend them.

1.      The Emotion Thesaurus – I love this book so much. All of the books in the series, actually. They are SO helpful for crafting believable emotions and developing characters.

2.      Rivet Your Readers With Deep Point of View – This little booklet really transformed my writing. Deep POV is something I’m very passionate about and put a lot of effort into when I’m editing. This is the book that first showed me how lacking my writing was at the time and helped me start writing much better fiction.

3.      Deep Point of View (A Busy Writer’s Guide #9) – Another really great book on writing deep POV. It’s longer than the Rivet Your Readers booklet, so it goes more in depth. I have over 150 highlights in this book on my Kindle.

4.      Showing and Telling in Fiction (A Busy Writer’s Guide #4) – Show, don’t tell is something you see constantly when it comes to writing. Sometimes that’s easy, other times, not so much. This book is great at explaining and giving examples to help grasp the concept. I highly recommend all the A Busy Writer’s Guide books, but the two mentioned are my favorites and the ones that have helped me the most.

5.      Write Up a Storm with the Polk Street School – I had to include this one because it was the very first writing book I ever read. I was probably 9 or 10 at the time. I loved it so much, and it really had an impact on me as a budding writer. I gifted this book to my young cousin a few years back, and if my niece or any of my nephews shows interest in writing as they get older, I will certainly gift it to them too.

No Man Cover Reveal

We're getting a new Firmament book next week! *does happy dance* It's been two years—TWO YEARS!!!—since the last Firmament book, which is way, way, WAY too long. Tiny Little Rocks

I'm updating Espionage to match Time Captives! Espionage is integral to understanding Briznom's role in Crannig Castle; however, it's been sort of left out in the cold. On its own. But no more!

I've got the cover redone, and those who have seen it love it! It's still the same general concept (I couldn't get rid of that) with the same model. Incidentally, the same girl I mentioned last week as being my student/honorary lil sis in our Hunger Games medley. See why I couldn't change it? But I did put her in a better forest, played with the photo effects, and redesigned it to match Time Captives. I have a proof copy on the way for the paperback, and I have something special planned for the ebook. More details on that coming soon. :)

Now, when I did the original edition, well, I decided last minute to draw pictures for chapter headers. In 2 1/2 days. Because I is crazy. Well, I was happy with most of them. Particularly the one of Vannie for the last chapter. But the one for the penultimate chapter...well, let's just say buildings are NOT my favorite thing to draw, I was tired of drawing, and I cheated. This is how it turned out.

I didn't like it, even from the start, but I was too tired and lazy and ready to get a proof to redo it. So I promised myself that when I did a second edition sometime in the future, I would redraw the picture. I hate me.

I hadn't intended to do this second edition so soon any more than I had Time Captives, but after Realm Makers, I decided I needed to go ahead and [details redacted] and to do that, I needed to do this second edition. So out came the sketch pad and the pencil and the reference pictures (well, the sketch pad was already out because of another secret Time Captives project I'm working on), and did just about everything else before I actually drew the picture. Because all the tiny little rocks. 😠 

I like drawing. Well, I like drawing people. I do not like drawing hundreds of tiny little rocks. But I'd made myself promise and I couldn't go back on it. And a couple days and lots of Disney music later, I finally finished. And I'm SOOOOOOO glad I did it. Even with all the tiny little rocks.

And now I can't wait to get my proof and share it with you and announce what I'm doing with the ebook, and with my other Time Captives project (though that one's much more labor intensive and will take a while), because it's going to be awesome!

But I've just got to say, this sign for a library display was MUCH more fun to draw.

I finished my Anna dress! The appliques were a BEAR to put on, but once I figured out what I was doing, it was just super duper time consuming. But hey, I was able to finish The Books of Bayern on Full Cast Audio, so that's awesome, and I LOVE my costume.

So that's ready. One thing done for Realm Makers! I've also got copies of Time Captives ordered for the consignment sale, so if you're going to be at Realm Makers, you'll be able to buy the brand new editions in person.

I've gone through family edits on Acktorek, which included eating two carrot sticks at once and acting out scenes to make sure they're actually possible. It's been interesting. I've also worked on a logline and on the back cover copy. It's definitely getting close to complete! Aaaaaalmost ready for pitching at Realm Makers. Here's my logline:

When a blind teen gains the uncanny ability to manipulate energy, her skeptical sister must join forces with a rookie secret agent and unravel the mystery before his devious boss ends her life.

So those are the main things I've been working on. I've also got business cards ordered, and I really like the way the design turned out. Realm Makers is almost here!

P.S. Just saw Aladdin and it was pretty awesome. I didn't think Jafar looked evil/scary enough, but other than that, it was great.

I'm super duper excited about these covers! I also want to give a humongous shout out to Jaye L. Knight. She gave me sooooo much advice as I went through the process of creating these covers, and they would not be what they are without her. She's seriously the best.

Something else big with these editions (and yes, I'm being mean and writing things for you to scroll through before you can see the covers) is that I have my own imprint! I bought a block of ISBNs to use for my books, so now I'm ShireWood Press. It's super exciting to me and I love my ShireWood logo and website. We'll even be using ShireWood Press to publish my great great grandpa's poetry in one volume for the first time later this year. Some cool stuff. :)

Christmastime is Here!

It's Christmastime! Yes, this post is late...with Thanksgiving and all, I forgot to write up a post. Oops. 

I really love this song, and Charlie Brown, and I'm enjoying teaching this song to one of my piano students, and I'm really excited about the Charlie Brown float we're putting together for the library's participation in our local Christmas parade this Friday. It's going to be awesome. I'll have to post some pictures when it's done.

Speaking of the library...

Rebekah and I are doing a program this Saturday at the Ball Ground Library. We're really excited about it. We'll be reading the book and learning to sculpt Carrie, so it's going to be great. If you're in the area, you're more than welcome to come. Registration is recommended, but not required, so if you want to register, just call 770-735-2025.

Looking forward in December, there's a blog tour coming up! In just a few weeks, I'll be posting my reviews for Bitter Winter and Lacy by Jaye L. Knight and Decree by Tricia Mingerink. They're all absolutely fabulous books, and you're going to have to read them when they come out...assuming you've read previous books in the two series. These aren't books to start on. But both series are fabulous, so read them. And because it's getting to the end of the year, my top ten books of the year post will be coming. That's going to be hard to narrow down. I've read a lot of great books this year. Good thing I've set a precedent of counting all the books in a series as one. Because you'd better believe Ranger's Apprentice is going to be on the list.
